Sequencing of Circulating Microbial Cell-Free DNA Can Identify Pathogens in Periprosthetic Joint Infections
Prospective observational study of 53 adults with hip or knee periprosthetic joint infections at a U.S. musculoskeletal specialty hospital. Microbial cell-free DNA from peripheral blood was sequenced and compared to standard intraoperative tissue and synovial fluid cultures, demonstrating that bloodstream cfDNA NGS can accurately identify causative pathogens — including in cases where culture fails — without invasive joint sampling.
