Why complicated UTIs
Patients with complicating factors are at higher risk for worse health and treatment outcomes. The diversity of pathogens affecting these patients is not easily detected in standard urine culture. These pathogens are more likely to be drug resistant. And if not promptly identified and treated, your UTI could worsen into a kidney infection, or even urosepsis.

Why do cultures come back negative sometimes?
As many as 1 in 3 urine cultures fail to identify the pathogen(s) causing a patient's UTI symptoms. This is because not all pathogens grow well under laboratory conditions, and some may not grow at all. A negative culture does not mean nothing is wrong. It often means your infection is being missed, and more comprehensive testing is necessary.
